City National Bank Financial Reporting Manager in Los Angeles, California

The Manager of Financial Reporting and Accounting Policy will be responsible for managing City National Bank's (the "Bank") various financial reporting obligations and maintaining the accounting policies. The Manager will oversee the Bank's production of the annual audited financial statements, including coordination with external auditors; and will also be responsible for financial reporting to our US and Canadian parent companies. Oversight of accounting policy will include, implementation of new accounting pronouncements, performing research and documenting technical accounting issues, assisting with ad hoc projects. The role will report to the Manager of Financial and Regulatory Reporting and will work closely with key partners such as the CFO, the Controller and Internal Audit in leading these activities across the organization. Key stakeholders include the Audit Committee, external auditors and CNB's ultimate parent company, Royal Bank of Canada ("RBC").

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the process of external financial reporting, including coordinating the preparation and review of the Bank's annual audited financial statements

  • Collaborate with RBC accounting and reporting departments in US and Canada to ensure that assigned portions of parent company reporting are timely and accurately prepared and reviewed on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis

  • Oversee the accounting for certain areas such as share-based compensation, derivatives and equity investments

  • Serve as the Bank's subject matter expert on technical US GAAP accounting

  • Maintain the Bank's accounting policy manual and ensure it adequately addresses the needs and objectives of the Bank's operations

  • Monitor new and proposed accounting developments

  • Research, interpret, document and apply/assist in the adoption of newly released accounting standards

  • Review and document US GAAP accounting considerations relating to potential transactions and new or proposed Bank products

  • Coordinate across departments to deliver appropriate and accurate guidance/consultation on technical accounting issues

  • Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including the Bank's external auditor to successfully resolve complex accounting and reporting matters

  • Work with RBC to monitor IFRS and US GAAP differences

  • Assist RBC with IFRS implementations as needed

  • Manage and develop professional staff with sufficient knowledge, skills and experience to support the Bank's requirements

  • Perform various accounting and reporting analyses and assist with special projects as requested

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of US GAAP accounting standards, including those relating to banking and financial services industry and other complex accounting concepts (e.g. business combinations, sale accounting (ASC 860), goodwill impairment assessment)

  • Ability to interpret and apply GAAP accounting standards

  • Ability to document accounting research and implementation white papers for a variety of audiences

  • Familiarity with IFRS and IFRS/US GAAP differences

  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and excellent work ethic

  • Ability to work independently and manage numerous priorities simultaneously

  • Strong project management skills

  • Strong managerial skills and ability to partner well with other internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to execute thoughtful analysis and acting with a sense of urgency and purpose when facing challenges

  • Commitment to and evidenced pursuit of continuing education related to the role

Basic Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant

  • 10-12 years' experience -- some Big 4 audit experience preferred

  • Experience in the banking or financial services industry

  • Bachelor's degree
