The Iowa Department of Transportation promotes highway safety and provides excellent and professional customer service to the citizens of Iowa, by making responsible licensing decisions to ensure only qualified drivers are licensed and identification cards are properly issued. This position will coordinate and provide general/technical direction to the driver's license team to ensure it functions as an effective and efficient team.
The Driver License Clerk Senior will work directly with customers at issuance site to review complete driver information from multiple data sources. This position will analyze information captured and determine proper issuance of notices. They will review documents in detail for accuracy and process without errors. A successful candidate will perform all license/ID issuance and record functions, by determining applicant's eligibility and qualifications so that credentials are issued in compliance with Iowa laws, departmental rules, and established policies and procedures; review record information to determine issuance/non-issuance; maintain familiarity with a variety of acceptable 'proof of identity' documents to determine authenticity.
This position will contribute to the safety of the public by ensuring each driver is capable of safely operating the vehicle for which they are licensed. Administer and score motorcycle skills, car, truck, passenger and CDL pre-trip, skills and road driving examinations and review driving performance following the drive test.
Shift: Tuesday - Saturday with varied hours.
Tuesday: 8:15 AM – 5:15 PM
Wednesday: 8:15 AM – 5:15 PM
Thursday: 7:45 AM – 5:15 PM
Friday: 8:15 AM – 5:15 PM
Saturday: 7:45 AM – 1:15 PM
NOTICE: This position is a covered position under the REAL ID Act of 2005, 49 U.S.C. § 30301 note, as further defined in 6 CFR Part 37. Any applicant selected for employment in this position must submit to and pass a background check of the form and content required by 6 CFR 37.45. All information gathered will be treated as confidential within the meaning of Iowa Code section 22.7, but all such information shall be available to the applicant upon request through the agency authorized to release such information, unless otherwise provided by law. Additionally, any applicant selected for a CDL test examiner position is subject to further background check requirements pursuant to 49 CFR 384.228. Criteria for not passing the criminal background check is set forth in 6 CFR 37.45 and 49 CFR 84.228(h)(3).
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and experience equal to three years of full-time clerical or closely related work;
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting nine months or thirty semester hours coursework in an accredited business school, college or university for each year of the required experience;
employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to six months of full-time work as a Drivers License Clerk.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain prior to appointment a valid unrestricted, except for corrective lenses, Operator's or Chauffeur's license issued by the state of residence and maintain a valid license for the duration of employment in this classification.
Hearing adequacy such to enable conversation within the passenger section of a motor vehicle while under operation.
After hire, must attend and successfully complete a Motorcycle Rider Education Safety course which includes a written and skill test.
After hire, must attend and successfully complete training sessions as required including car driving training and commercial vehicle school which requires the physical ability to operate a commercial vehicle.
